The Applied Research Conference (ARC) is an annual meeting place for academic researchers and practitioners working in people management, employment policy and related fields. It holds a unique place in bringing together these two communities to hear about cutting edge research in HR and discuss how it can be applied in practice.  

ARC is an interdisciplinary conference that covers a wide range of aspects of people management, employment, learning and development and organisational development. In all areas covered, we set out to discuss the practical application of research insights to organisational life and labour markets.

The CIPD Applied Research Conference took place on 25-26 January 2023 at the Alliance Manchester Business School, University of Manchester.

 

We provide the following publishing opportunities associated with ARC: 

Conference submissions

We publish the proceedings of the conference, including all accepted submissions, on the ARC webpage.

CIPD short papers

Short research papers for practitioner or policy audiences. All researchers who present at ARC are invited to write a 2-3,000 word paper summarising their research. These papers are published open access on the ARC webpage and promoted with CIPD members to raise the profile of your research.

Please note that these papers should: be written in a highly accessible way; emphasise insights and recommendations; clearly draw out (actual or potential) implications for practice or policy; give only brief accounts of background theory and methods; and explain technical terms where they are needed.

Peer-reviewed journal papers

The CIPD is proud to have four partner journals associated with ARC:   

  • Human Resource Development International (HRDI)
  • Human Resource Management Journal (HRMJ)
  • International Journal of Human Resource Management (IJHRM)
  • Journal of Organizational Effectiveness: People and Performance (JOEPP)

These journals run workshops at ARC on writing for journals and provide support to help ARC presenters get published

Where papers are not invited to peer review, feedback will be given without this constituting a desk rejection from the journal. If you submit to a journal following feedback, you should do so via their normal channels, flagging that the submission is made in association with ARC and requesting it to be allocated to the relevant editor. The journal will then attempt to fast track the paper, in so far as is reasonable given the necessary peer-review process.
