Gordon Smith, Engagement Manager, Scotland

Gordon plays a key role in connecting with members and organisations to strengthen relationships and build a vibrant professional community. He leads on engagement activity across the region, including running networks such as the Senior People Professionals Network and the Independent Consultants Network—providing opportunities for members to share insight, support one another, and stay connected to the wider people profession.

Marek Zemanik, Senior Public Policy Advisor, CIPD UK Nations

Marek leads the CIPD's public policy work in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, focusing primarily on fair work, skills and productivity.  He writes the CIPD's annual job quality report, Working Lives Scotland, and has written several policy and research reports around skills and the labour market in the devolved UK nations. He provides evidence to Parliamentary and Assembly committees, responds to government and executive consultations and inquiries and engages with ministers and civil servants.
 

Vivien Struthers, Senior Employer Solutions Manager

Vivien’s passion is unlocking the true potential of individuals and the companies that they work for, which is why she loves her role as Senior Employer Solutions Manager for the CIPD in Scotland and Northern England.

Working directly with organisations, Vivien partners with clients to build the capability, impact and credibility of their HR and people functions in order to deliver business outcomes.

Having held multiple senior roles specialising in people development and organisational change, Vivien brings her extensive experience, expertise and energy to this role.

Whether it's establishing what good looks like, assessing current capabilities, providing industry-leading people development programmes, professionalising the people function, or becoming organisationally recognised as a CIPD People Development Partner, Vivien is the person to speak to.

The HR Leaders Network is a space for the most senior people professionals in Scotland. It is designed for those in board-level or executive roles with organisation-wide responsibility for people strategy – such as HR Directors, People Directors, Chief HR Officers, and Chief People Officers.

Senior People Professionals Network

For CIPD members at Chartered Member level or above, this network is for those with strategic responsibility for people and organisational policy in Scotland.

It provides a trusted space to share insights, reflect on challenges, and strengthen leadership resilience. Members join an active online community on Mighty and benefit from a year-round programme of Scottish and national events, both in person and online.

Typical roles include Head of HR, Senior HR Business Partner, or People Lead – often reporting to the board or executive level and shaping people strategy and organisational culture.

CIPD policy forum network in Scotland

These CIPD networks bring together members based in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to ensure the unique needs and priorities of each nation are reflected in national and regional decision-making.

The networks provide a trusted space for people professionals to share insights, contribute expertise, and shape public policy. Members work together to address regional challenges, champion inclusive and fair work practices, and advocate for quality jobs across all sectors.

What have we been up to?

HR Magazine Conference

Gordan, Gina and Vivien had the chance to attend the HR Network Magazine leaders’ dinner and conference this month. The team hosted a table of senior CIPD members at the dinner, offering a great opportunity to discuss key priorities for people professionals across Scotland. They also had the chance exhibit at the conference, where the CIPD stand allowed them to reconnect with many of our fantastic people professionals.

Career Empowerment

The team in Scotland recently attended the CIPD Branch in West of Scotland annual Career Empowerment event, for students and early-career members. Gordon spoke alongside co-chair, Michael Youd, committee member Dr Silvio Hoffman, and Melissa Curtis on topics such as networking skills, the importance of reflective practice, and the skills employers are really looking for in early careers.

An incredible day of inspiration, connection, and learning. With over 600 people professionals in attendance, the event featured thought-provoking sessions from start to finish — from an impactful opening keynote by Colin MacLachlan to a powerful closing from Fern Brady.
